What is myositis?

Myositis is considered to be an autoimmune condition in which the muscles of the body are severely affected. Its common symptoms include muscle pain, fatigue, difficulty in eating and drinking and difficulty in breathing. Women are more vulnerable to this disease than men and it can also affect children.

Five types of myositis and their symptoms

There are five types of myositis: – Dermatomyositis, Inclusion-Body, Juvenile Myositis, Polymyositis and Toxic Myositis.

1-Dermatomyositis causes a purple-red rash to appear on the face, chest, neck and back. Other symptoms include rough skin, fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle pain, weight loss, irregular heartbeat, etc.

2-inclusive-body myositis (IBM) affects men more than women and mostly develops in people aged 50 years and older. , Its symptoms include muscle weakness, balance problems, loss of grip and muscle pain.

3-Juvenile myositis (JM) occurs in children. It occurs more in girls than boys. Its symptoms include red-purple rash, fatigue, unstable mood, abdominal pain, trouble getting up from a sitting position, muscle weakness, joint pain, fever etc.

4-Polymyositis begins with symptoms like muscle weakness. All the muscles near the torso are first attacked by the disease. Its symptoms are muscle weakness and pain, problems with swallowing, balance problems, dry cough, thickening of the skin on the hands, shortness of breath, weight loss and fever.

5-The fifth type is called toxic myositis. This happens due to the use of prescribed drugs and illegal drugs. Cholesterol drugs like statins cause this. Other drugs that rarely trigger it are omeprazole, adalimumab and cocaine. Its symptoms are similar to other types of myositis.

treatment of myositis

There is no specific medicine for myositis. However, a class of drugs called corticosteroids are prescribed by doctors. Since it is an autoimmune disease, immunosuppressant drugs are also used. Physical therapy, yoga and other forms of exercise are also used to maintain muscle strength.
